Which Facebook video and Reel links SaveNova can process
Facebook links are ambiguous until you look at the path. This guide separates the shapes that identify one public video from the ones that do not.
Facebook is the platform where people most often paste the wrong thing. A link that opens the right video in the Facebook app can still be a feed URL, a group post, or a share wrapper with no video behind it. SaveNova only proceeds when the path identifies one public video, Reel, or video post.
Accepted Facebook link shapes
| URL shape | What it points at | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| facebook.com/watch/?v=123… | A single video in the Watch player | The query parameter carries the video ID |
| facebook.com/…/videos/123…/ | A video on a page or profile | The numeric video ID is on the path |
| facebook.com/reel/123…/ | A public Reel | Same media pipeline as a video post |
| facebook.com/…/posts/123…/ | A post that contains a video | Requires the post to be public and to include video |
| facebook.com/share/r/…, /share/v/…, /share/p/… | Mobile share wrappers | Resolved to the public post before retrieval |
| fb.watch/… | The short share domain | Resolved server-side; expired links are rejected |
What is deliberately not accepted
- Profile and page home URLs. They contain a whole feed, not one video.
- Group posts. Group content is usually login-gated, and SaveNova never uses an account session.
- Marketplace and shop listings. These are not video media targets.
- Photo posts and albums. SaveNova’s Facebook module is a video pipeline; it does not extract still images from photo sets.
- Raw CDN URLs. A direct
fbcdn.netlink is not a public permalink and is never fetched as one.
What file you get back
Facebook publishes video through a mix of direct files and segmented streams. When a progressive file is exposed, SaveNova retrieves it. When only separate video and audio streams are available, they are merged into one MP4 on the server so you never receive a silent video. When the only public source is WebM, the option is labelled WebM instead of being renamed MP4.
Quality labels come from what Facebook actually serves. If the only public version is 480p, the page says 480p. There is no “HD” badge on a file whose dimensions are unknown, which is why some options show a container and no resolution.
Copying the right link on Android
Find the video’s own page
Open the video, Reel, or post so it fills the screen. If you are looking at a feed card, the ··· menu may offer the post, the profile, and the video as separate links — choose the post or video.
Use Share → Copy link
Modern Facebook apps produce a /share/ wrapper. That is acceptable: SaveNova resolves the wrapper to the public post.
Paste and retrieve
A profile or group link is rejected with an explanation before any retrieval is attempted. A video link proceeds to the options list.
Copying the right link on iPhone
Copy from the video screen
Tap Share, then Copy link. If the app offers “Copy link” and “Copy link to post”, the post version is the safer choice for a video inside a post.
Paste in Safari
Allow the download prompt the first time. Safari stores the finished file in Files → Downloads.
Check the file plays before you delete the page
The preview player reads the local file, so it is a quick way to confirm the merge produced playable video. Closing the preview releases its temporary copy.
Facebook troubleshooting
| What happens | Why | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “Unsupported content path” | The URL is a profile, feed, group, or Marketplace page | Open the individual video and copy its own link |
| A login wall or “content unavailable” | The video is private, friends-only, age-gated, or region-restricted | There is no anonymous route to it |
| The options list shows WebM only | That is the only public source Facebook served | Save the WebM; renaming it would not make it MP4 |
| The transfer fails near the end | The CDN closed the connection or the size limit was reached | Retry once, check the file size against the limits, then use browser-only mode |
How this guide was checked: written by the SaveNova team and reviewed on 1 November 2026 against the behaviour of the current build, including the limitations described above. It contains no invented test results or performance figures. If a step no longer matches what you see, report the guide and we will correct it.
