Pinterest video Pins: what downloads, what does not, and why
Pinterest does not serve every video the same way. This guide explains the Pin types SaveNova can read, the manifest-only case, and the phone steps for both.
Pinterest is the one supported platform where “a video Pin” is not a single technical thing. Some Pins expose a direct MP4, some expose only a streaming manifest, and some are a stack of images with a video in the middle. SaveNova reads each Pin and reports what it actually found; it does not promise an MP4 for every Pin URL.
The four Pin types you will meet
| Pin type | How it is published | What SaveNova offers |
|---|---|---|
| Image Pin | A single image, usually available at several sizes | The largest original image the Pin exposes, as JPG, PNG, or WEBP |
| Direct video Pin | A real MP4 file on Pinterest’s CDN | That MP4, labelled with its detected resolution, plus an MP3 conversion button that reports when conversion is unavailable |
| Manifest-only video Pin | An HLS playlist (.m3u8) with no direct file | An honest explanation that no MP4 file is available; optional server-side conversion only if the operator has enabled it |
| Idea Pin or multi-media Pin | Several images, or images mixed with short video clips | Each item listed separately, in order, with its own download button |
The HLS question, explained without marketing
HLS is a streaming format: the video is cut into segments listed in a playlist, and the player fetches them as it plays. Turning that into a single MP4 requires downloading the segments and remuxing them with FFmpeg. On SaveNova that conversion is an optional server feature that is off by default, because it is CPU- and bandwidth-heavy and needs a working FFmpeg binary plus enough temporary disk space.
When the feature is unavailable, the correct outcome is a clear “no downloadable MP4” message. A page that quietly offers a thumbnail renamed as .mp4 would produce a file that fails to play, which wastes more of your time than an honest refusal. If you see the manifest-only message, the Pin itself is the limitation, not your phone or your connection.
Regional domains and pin.it shortlinks
Pinterest redirects visitors to regional domains such as br.pinterest.com, de.pinterest.com, pinterest.co.uk, or pinterest.ca, and the mobile app often produces a pin.it shortlink. SaveNova recognises these hosts, resolves the shortlink, and normalises the URL to the same public Pin. Shortlink resolution happens server-side against Pinterest, so an expired or unrelated pin.it link is reported instead of being followed blindly.
Saving a Pin on Android
Copy the Pin link
Tap the ··· menu on the Pin and choose Copy link. For an Idea Pin, copy the link from the Pin page itself rather than from a board.
Paste it into SaveNova
The Pin ID is validated and regional domains are normalised. A board URL is not a Pin, so it is rejected before retrieval.
Pick the asset you want
Image Pins give you the image file. Video Pins give you the MP4 when one exists. Multi-media Pins are split into numbered items so you can save only the part you need.
Saving a Pin on iPhone and iPad
Copy from the Pinterest app
Use the share arrow or ··· menu and choose Copy link. The resulting pin.it link works; you do not have to expand it yourself.
Retrieve in Safari
Paste the link and press Download. Safari will ask for permission the first time a download starts from the site.
Finish the save in Files
Completed downloads appear in Files → Downloads. Videos saved this way can be played from Files; images need Share → Save Image before they appear in Photos.
Pinterest troubleshooting
| Symptom | Explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “No downloadable media found” | The Pin is a product Pin with no media, or a video that exists only as a protected stream | Try the Pin’s own image; if there is none, the Pin has nothing to save |
| A video Pin returns only an image | Pinterest may serve a poster image for a manifest-only video | The poster is labelled as an image; do not expect it to play |
| The shortlink cannot be resolved | The pin.it link expired or belongs to a removed Pin | Open the Pin in the app and copy a fresh link |
| A secret board Pin fails | Secret boards require an account, which SaveNova never uses | There is no supported workaround |
