How to save a public Instagram Reel on Android and iPhone
The exact copy-and-paste flow on both phone platforms, what comes back for Reels and carousels, and the cases where Instagram simply will not serve the file.
Instagram Reels are the most common links people paste into SaveNova, and they are also the ones that fail for the most ordinary reasons: the link came from a private account, it was a Story instead of a Reel, or the post was deleted between copying and pasting. This guide walks through the flow that works on both Android and iPhone, and is honest about the cases where nothing will download.
What SaveNova can retrieve from Instagram
SaveNova accepts four kinds of public Instagram permalinks: Reels (/reel/ and /reels/), ordinary posts (/p/), IGTV videos (/tv/), and the /share/ links the mobile app produces when you tap Copy link. A share link is accepted as it is — you never have to expand the token by hand — while the extra tracking parameters Instagram appends are stripped from the request.
What comes back depends entirely on what the post publishes. A Reel is offered as an MP4 at the resolution Instagram actually serves. A single-image post arrives as a JPG or WEBP at the size the post exposes. A carousel is listed slide by slide. SaveNova does not invent extra resolutions, upscale a 540p video to look like 1080p, or add buttons that all point at the same file.
- Public Reels, posts, carousels, and IGTV videos.
- Multi-slide carousels, with each slide shown separately (for example “Slide #1 (IMAGE)”).
- An MP3 conversion button beside video entries; the server converts when FFmpeg is available and says clearly when it is not.
- Honest watermark labels, explained in what “Without Watermark” actually means.
Four things that have to be true first
- The account is public. If you have to follow the account to see the post, SaveNova cannot reach it, and it will not pretend otherwise.
- You have the post link, not the profile link. A URL ending in
/instagram.com/username/has no single media item behind it. - The post still exists. Deleted posts and expired Reels return an honest “content unavailable” message rather than a placeholder.
- You have the right to save it. Public visibility is not the same as permission to reuse. See copyright and responsible saving.
Saving a Reel on Android
Copy the link from Instagram
Open the Reel, tap the ⋯ or Share icon, then tap Copy link. On the web, copy the address bar, which looks like instagram.com/reel/…/ .
Paste it into SaveNova and press Download
The link is checked against Instagram’s public URL shapes, cleaned of tracking parameters, and sent to the extraction step. You do not need to be logged in to Instagram for this.
Check the option you are about to save
The download list shows the real container and resolution, and whether the file carries Instagram’s overlay. The MP3 button beside a video entry asks the server to convert the audio; if FFmpeg is not installed on that deployment, the request fails with an explicit message instead of producing a file.
Complete the browser save
SaveNova hands the finished file to your browser. Chrome shows the transfer in the download notification, and the file normally lands in your device’s Downloads folder. Gallery apps only show a video there if your device’s media scanner has indexed it.
Saving a Reel on iPhone and iPad
Copy the link in the Instagram app
Tap the paper-plane or ⋯ icon, choose Copy link, then switch to Safari. SaveNova works in any current browser on iOS, but Safari keeps the clearest download record.
Paste and retrieve
Safari may ask whether to allow a download from savenova.site the first time. Allow it once; the prompt is Safari’s, not a login request from SaveNova.
Watch the transfer finish
The in-page percentage measures the transfer into temporary browser storage. On iPhone the final save is handled by iOS, so the page can see that the transfer finished but cannot see whether you moved the file afterwards.
Find the file
Open the Files app and look in Downloads on iCloud Drive or On My iPhone, depending on your Safari download settings. For an image, open the downloaded file and use Share → Save Image to place it in Photos.
Carousels: saving every slide without losing count
For a multi-image post, SaveNova lists each slide as its own entry with a numbered label. Save them in order and the numbering matches the post. There is no “download all” archive: that would mean building a ZIP on the server, and each slide is a separate public image with its own size. Save only the slides you actually need — it is faster, and it avoids storing media you have no use for.
Instagram problems you are likely to meet
| What you see | Why it happens | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “Unsupported content” or a request for a /p/, /reel/, or /tv/ link | The URL was a profile, Explore page, or a Reels feed tab without a post ID | Open the individual post and use Share → Copy link |
| A login or “restricted” message | The account is private, the post is age-gated, or it requires a login Instagram will not give an anonymous request | Nothing on SaveNova can change this; ask the creator for a public copy or use Instagram while signed in |
| A Story link fails to retrieve | Instagram normally serves Stories only to a logged-in session, and SaveNova has none | Ask the creator to publish it as a Reel or post, or use Instagram while signed in |
| The download fails after the options appeared | Instagram’s CDN link expired or the transfer was interrupted | Paste the post link again to get a fresh retrieval, then save promptly |
When Instagram’s own Save button is the better answer
If the video is yours, use Instagram’s own download option when it is offered (creators can enable downloads for Reels). If you only want to keep something for later viewing inside the app, saving it to a collection does that without copying the file. SaveNova exists for the case where you need the actual media file on your own device, and for links to content you own or have permission to use.
